FAQs
Homestay is a popular form of accommodation whereby an international guest lives with a local individual or family (known as a host). In exchange for monetary compensation, a guest is usually provided access to a furnished bedroom, meals and facilities such as the laundry and other common areas of the home.
Homestay offers both the host and guest with the opportunity to exchange cultures, languages and backgrounds during their time together.
If the student/guest has booked a Homestay With Meals, you will also need to provide:
- a private bedroom with a single bed, wardrobe and desk with a lamp
- all utilities (electricity, water, gas)
- internet access - laundry facilities
- breakfast and dinner on weekdays (Monday to Friday)
- breakfast, lunch and dinner on weekends (Saturday and Sunday.
If a student/guest has booked a Homestay Without Meals, you will need to provide:
- a private bedroom with a single bed, wardrobe and desk with a lamp
- all utilities (electricity, water, gas) - internet access
- laundry facilities
- access to your kitchen so they can prepare their own meals.
You will also need to:
- monitor your student’s health and well-being
- provide a friendly and inviting home for your student
- have Home & Contents Insurance or as a minimum, Contents Insurance. The insurance must also have Public Liability cover.
Please contact Study Vision whenever you have concerns about your student.
If you will be hosting underage students (under 18), you are required to have a Working With Children (WWC) clearances for all adult family members, but we do prefer that all host families have valid WWC clearances, whether they are hosting underage students or not.
Hosts are paid a weekly fee to cover the expenses involved in hosting a student. Study Vision will collect these fees from the student, to prevent any confusion or issues between the student and the host. Do not collect any money directly from the student without first consulting Study Vision.
Study Vision will transfer the Homestay Fees to the host by Bank Transfer every 2 weeks, within 2-7 business days of the due date. Hosts should inform Study Vision immediately if there are any changes to their banking details.
Once we complete your registration, you will be in the queue to be allocated a student or other guest. We cannot guarantee when you will actually get a guest, as it depends on how many applications we receive, and each guest’s requirements.
We do our best to place students/guests with homestays whenever they have rooms available. However, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to place a student/guest with you immediately.
Under the ATO’s tax ruling 2001/381, the amount received by a taxpayer with regards to a student who is boarding with them under a homestay arrangement is not assessable under section 6-5 of the ITAA 1997.
This is because the amount paid to you as a host to board a homestay student is used to pay all of the household expenses of the student (e.g. food, phone, electricity, etc).
Please note: This ruling is for hosts intending to board one or two students at any time. We strongly recommend speaking with your financial adviser about your specific circumstances before making a decision to host.
